Top Beaches on the "Kona Side" of the Big Island of Hawaii

The positive effects of a relaxing day at one numerous beaches on the "Kona side" of the Big Island of Hawaii cannot be overstated. The attractive surf, Hawaiian coastline, and lively oceans contribute to some of the most unique and pristine beaches most will ever see.  Kona boasts some of the most diverse ecosystems that feature year-round surf conditions, historical landmarks, and of course schools of beautiful fish and coral. It is difficult to narrow down a list, but here are just a few must-see beaches for sunbathers and surfers alike.

1. Hapuna Beach

Located on the Kohala Coast, this coastal enclave consistently ranks in top ten lists of the island’s best beaches. This is largely owed to the year-round favorable climate and numerous activities that go along with the weather. Without a doubt one of the most family-friendly beaches on the island, the crystal-clear waters are always excellent for swimming, bodyboarding, sun tanning, and snorkeling. For nature enthusiasts, this beach lies along a whale migration path! Be sure to research the proper time of year and conditions for this unique experience.

2. Magic Sand Beach

Located in La’aloa Bay, this beach certainly lives up to its name. La’aloa translates to “very sacred” in the Hawaiian language and one look from the coastline and it’s easy to understand where the name comes from.

Upon walking up to the shore, the most astonishing feature you will notice are the numerous changing hues of blue as you look out from the coast. The water will change from a soft teal as it slowly descends into a deep ocean blue. Tide pools along the volcanic rocky coast teem with life and are great for spotting crabs, feeding birds, and even turtles!

3. Kahalu’u Beach Park

A marine protected area just south of Kailua-Kona town center. This eco-park easily takes the crown when it comes to the best snorkeling in Kona. The bay has been populated for the last 500 years with records of royal residences in the 18th and 19th centuries and features several heiaus (Hawaiian temples) in the area.

When it comes to snorkeling, you’ll find the typical Hawaiian translucent water paired with some of the most unique fish you will ever see. With easily 20 feet of visibility underwater, the ocean is filled with life as schools of fish comfortably swim by your side.

Kahalu’u Beach is also known as a legendary surf spot as you perch atop your board while peering through the transparent water at the coral and fish below. Suitable for all levels, there are plenty of small waves for beginners near the reef with larger waves on the outside for the more advanced. Surfboard rentals are available within the park.
